Research Class Exercise

Name something you have researched in the past for art, design or media.

I was doing a research about Paula Scher.

Explain how you researched this?

I new this artist because I was watching episode in “Abstract the art of design”. I remembered that my friend showed me this series. I came back to episode “Paula Scher: Graphic Design” to make research about her. Than I started to looking for her books and web with portfolio, and I was trying to find her works.

What facts did you discover?

Paula Scher is one of the most influential graphic designer in the world. She began her career as an art director i the 1970s and early 80s. Scher has developed identity and branding systems, promotional materials, environmental graphics, packaging and publication desig for a broad range of clients. She has been the recipient of hundreds of industry honours and awards. Her work has been exhibited alll over the world and is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in NY.

Research into my major project

My major project is to create brand for my company. I intend to create a logo, ad poster, business card layout and website.

I will research into branding meaning. What I need to create good brand and I will research into basic and history of graphic design.

About branding:

Creating a brand identity is a complex challenge for graphic designers. It is important to understand marketing and consumer behaviour as well as practical design skills. A brand is used to promote everything from clothes to persons. Walter Landor once said “Products are created in a factory. Bans are created in the mind.” Brand is the whole creation process which makes one product or service seem different from competitor products.

About graphic design:

We use graphic design to communicate a message or to create an experience for an audience. It is the process of combining visual material (text, imagery, posters, info graphics and other elements). Graphic design isn’t just final product, it is creating ideas, sketches, research, and many other things. Designers use many tools and techniques. Every piece of design is the result of the creative process. Designers need to conduct research about client, target audience and the context. They create sketches and layouts which are part of visual exploration. This process is usually very long. Designers most of the time need to work with many ideas before they identify the best solution. Exploring multiple ideas leads to better quality work and the more time you spend looking at work, the easier it is to analyse and critique your work.

Comments

  1. Nice work on the class task, however you have not added what you will be researching for your research through your major project and your research for your major project. I think it would be good if you added that information and started working on that research.

  2. A good start on the class task here, do complete this post with the final sections on research. Then use this to go forward with your project research in further posts, with images and commentary on the chosen desginer's work.
