Week one: First Thoughts... RE-ASSESMENT

In this post I would like to write down my first thoughts about our Set Project. In this project we have to create six 2D pieces using one of the 3 themes we gave. Second thing is that it have to be related with our continuation route.

After reading the themes I decided to go with the third one:

Expressionism. Look deeply into expressionism and incorporate this style into your art and design project.

I did a quick research about paintings in expressionism and I found two paintings that I liked the most.

The Scream, 1893 by Edvard Munch

This painting is one of the most famous and iconic artwork on the whole world. 'The Scream' is the expressionistic work based on author's experience. What people does not know there are few versions of this painting. There are two versions with oil and tempera and two drawings with pastel and crayon.

The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh wasn’t really expressionism artist but he was very important for this movement. He was precursor of it. This is his painting that I really like - 'The Starry Night' by Vincent Van Gogh. It was painted in 1889. I like that blue colour dominate in this painting and also brush strokes. This effect reminds me of moving she when you are take photo of shy using long exposition. It looks dreamlike and magical. What is also interesting in this painting the sky and town are created by using different strokes what makes the perfect divider.

After research of expressionism paintings I end up with idea to choose 6 the most famous movie posters and recreate them in expressionism style. Maybe I will choose my favourite too. I think it will be good idea to apply this theme to work in my own subject area which is graphic design. Also I am really into watching movies and it will be enjoyable for me too. Second thing is that I could make lot of research in this area. I could research artists, paintings and also expressionism in cinema. Maybe posters were created differently that time.

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920), Directed by Robert Wiene

After talk with my tutor I developed my idea to create 6 posters to film that I will invent. The posters will be in German Expressionism style. I will experiment with different colour pallets and different styles of the poster layout. I will also looks at typefaces used by artists in that time. Because expressionism posters looks like hand draw (I do not know how they arise yet) and I will be draw digitally I want to experiment with different brushes to try achieve similarish  look.

  1. Whilst you have chosen some interesting initial examples, I think it is important to also look at the art movement too which should give you some further ideas. Artist such as Georg Grosz, Otto Dix were not just painters but graphic artists too. Frans Masereel created early Graphic Novels (illustrated with Woodcuts - a type of printing process). If you are going to develop the idea to create Movie Posters, there needs to be a stronger reason for creating this work, so it is necessary to focus on what you want to do with this in terms of how you want it to look and how you are going to experiment with materials to achieve the style you want.
