Week Five: Character Drawing
In today’s session we learned about basic proportion in the figure. The method that we were looking at can be modified to create a unique character. We looked at proportion measured in heads. About 8 heads is a full body.
The “8 heads’ measurement breaks down like this:
Going from first section to the last one we have:- Head
- Chin to chest
- Chest to navel
- Navel to bottom of hips or crotch
- Bottom of hips to mid-thigh
- Mid-tight to knees
- Knees to mid-shin
- Mid-shin to bottom heel of foot
To create my sketch I used he pencil. First I tried to create sections of same size, then I started drawing the figure starting with head.
After this exercise we had 40 minutes to create our own character. I decided to draw my character digitally.
First I find my reference photo. Using this photo I draw my very first sketch.
Then I added details such as hair and face. Here I just used my imagination. To make sure that everything is in the good place I used my knowledge about face proportion.
First sketch, hair and dress are on different layers. To work easier I decided to use different colours on different layers, however to create my fine line draw I used one layer and only one colour - black. I had to be sure that all my lines are ‘close’. It is important for my further work.
After this step I deleted my sketch layers because I didn’t need them anymore.
Then I added colours. To make work easier I changed my line layer into reference layer. With this step, I could add my colours on different layers and they stay inside my line draw. I just had to remember to create all new layers under the reference layer.
To create final result I added background.
