Final Outcomes + Reflection

In this post I would like to present all final outcomes for this project. I decided to name it ‘Bajor’. However, every poster here their own subtitle.

The aim of the project was to create six 2D outcomes for chosen theme. I choose ‘Expressionism’ and I decided to create the series of posters for movie that I invented.

The movie is about the life of my great-grandmother. Every poster shows the one of her period of the life. What inspired me to create this project was conversations with my great-grandmother. I thought that every one should hear her story and I used the circumstances to create this project.

The first poster from the series is scene where my great-grandmother has to leave the home, leave the city, leave the father and move to the country side because of the war. I named it ‘Bajor-Train’. On these scene I wanted to present the train and waving kids for goodbye. I kept main colours dark and sad but I did not want them to be black. To contrast I added the colour that I saw a lot in different German Expressionism’ Movie Posters. I stick with this colour palette for the whole series.

The second posters shows my great-grandmother on a swing. Title for this poster is ‘Bajor-Swing’. When I talked with my great-grandmother about her childhood on countryside I remember that she said that she and her siblings usually played in the home. It was dangerous to play outside. But when they were allowed to play outside, she said that she liked the most the swing.

‘Bajor-Destroyed City’ is a third poster for my series. It shows my great-grandmother coming back to her home after war. Unfortunately, both her houses was destroyed. She was a little bit older than, that is why she remembers this situation very clearly. I think that on this poster the title looks the best. Font that I created looks a little bit distorted and uneven. I think it completes the background with destroyed city.

The fourth poster,‘Bajor-Choir’, shows the period when my great-grandmother sang in church choir. It was important part of her life, because it was forbidden back then. The teachers cover her and she has to be very careful. She also wanted to become the teacher (and she did), but this could disturb her.

Creating this poster I thought that I want to connect the inside and the outside of the church to make this scene more understandable. That is why you can watch the building - church on very background, than a little bit of abstract inside to give only idea of inside and than my great-grandmother at front. Here I changed her hair style to be more similar for what she looks like today.

The last poster shows my great-grandmother herself - 'Bajor - Janina'. I wanted one outcome to present her so this one is a little bit different. It doesn’t have the black shapes of the people. I played with shadows and shapes here to create minimalistic portrait of my great-grandmother. I focused on the most characteristic and important details and i choose minimum.

Every poster is kept in same aesthetic. I added title in exactly the same place in every poster, however the ‘actor’ description had to change places to looks good on a poster. When I was making research for poster layout I noticed that lot of posters have frame so I added one too. On this frame you can read the ‘Leading Off’.

Considering the whole work that I have to put in this project I found it enjoyable. It was good to find the time for interview with my great-grandmother and I am honoured that she wanted to talk with me about it. I found this project to be sentimental that is why I liked it. However it has difficulties. The most difficult part was to create in different style. Despite I did research about this art movement it still was hard to understand how to create shapes to make my work looks like expressionism’s work. However, I think I did what I could to use the most of the knowledge that I gain.

I liked final effect and I think it improve my drawing and illustrations skill. However, I am not into illustration so the most enjoyable part was researching about layout, style, and kind of movie posters and move advertisement. I did not like the dark and creepy style, however I liked retro/vintage looking and hand-written, rough font style.

In conclusion I think that this project was challenging but also sentimental for me and enjoyable.
