Research: The Anatomy of a Movie Poster

The movie posters and adds are in my opinion the most pleasure to watch way of advertising film. I always admired how designers can express emotions and style and what movie is/will be about.

In this post I would like to discuss the anatomy of movie poster. Graphic design have the rules and so the posters. The most important is layout, that I will discuss below. I won't talk about size here, as I won't print it as a real poster. The size that I choose is a standard A4. However, it is important to think about proper size when you are creating this kind of advertisement.

All posters usually have

  • title
  • actors/stars
  • director
  • release date
  • slogan (not always)
In my opinion the most eye catching and important is typography in posters. Posters helps to present to the mind a cinematic experience in 2d, immovable form. The movie poster is place to be creative but for beginners layouts could be helpful. Here is a layout that I found on Adobe SP:

In this example we can see that on the bottom of the poster we place 'Leading Off'. That means we write down all 'presented by' credits. All companies that present this movie such as: Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures etc. This part is long and complicated as some companies have associations and productions.

Than we are going to the cast. The most popular one right now is 'top billing' which means that the names are on top of the sheet.

However the crew has a specific order: first casting by.., than costumes by.., than edited by..than production designer.., producers, writers and writing teams and finally direction. Sometimes we can also notice the logos of companies.

These part of poster have a specific font. It looks like that because of the lots of information that should be include on poster.

Some of creators use and follow these rules but there are also others who tested style.

Things like: colours, movement and composition depends from the artist. But we have to remember the colour theory and just now the rules and tips basic for graphic designers.

  1. A good post that looks at the anatomy of the poster, remember to include contextual commentary - what have you learned from the research to apply in your own poster designs, development and content - there is some here, but try to add further commentary especially when you are discussing specific poster designs in this or future posts.
