Erich Heckel - Characters: Research

Image
In my project I will be creating characters for my movie. In this research I want focus on style of creating characters. I chose Erich Heckel to look at.  Erich Heckel was a German painter and printmaker born in 1883 in Dobeln. He was a member of the German Expressionist group Die Brucke. He was known for his painting and woodcuts of nudes and landscapes, however I want to focus on his hand printed characters. He started create portraits in 1910 after he met his cuter wife. During the war his works featured spiritual isolation and melancholy. He made a lot of prints in time of his career. Most of them were self-printed.  My major project is related to life of my grandmother. That’s why I choose this picture first. Head of Violinist by E. Heckel is a woodcut portrait. As we can see artist used only basic shapes to get us an idea of character. For example, we associate old face with wrinkles on whole face, however Heckel decided to put wrinkles only on forehead to get us idea of...

What do I know about Graphic Design

What should I be doing in my subject area? When we talk about graphic designers we usually imagine a person who sits all day in front of the computer and don’t have to even go out. It is wrong idea about what graphic design is. As a graphic designer you should be familiar with skills you need to know but also know what is going on on the market and on the world. I should know the trends, know art and design history, take part in events and be active. Before pandemic I suggest to visit art galleries, museums and go on graphic exhibitions (because they are interesting, enjoyable and inspirational). Also as a graphic I think  it is important to become a part of some groups and know people with same profession just to learn from the other. I think I also should be practice a lot. Drawing skills and illustration skills are skills that we can improve all the time. As a graphic designer I should practice, be creative and organize and I should try to know as much as I can about this ...

Research Exercise: Who am I?

Image
On today’s lecture we were researching ourselves. We were trying to answer questions like “who am I?, “why am I?”, “how did I become myself?”. We began with draw outline  of body. I decided to draw girl with dress, become I always liked to wear this kind of clothes. Also folk costumes of women in my country looks very similar. Then we started to answer the simple questions about our whole life.  On my drawing we can see a lot of white and red combinations. I used this colours because they are colours of my country- Poland. On the bottom of dress I drew my closest family members - my mom, my sister, my grandmother and great-grandmother. They are the most important people in my life. Then I added another layer in dress. This my early teens years. The most important thing for this period of my life was theatre. People who I met there and values that I learned was very important for me than. Also theatre changed me as a parson. Before it I was shy and I didn’t believe in mys...

Major Project: Initial Research

Image
In thi research I want to focus on Expressionism movie posters from German Expressionism period. The first movie poster I want talk about is design to movie “Metropolis”. It is silent movie from 1927 directed by Fritz Lang. It is about son of the city’s mastermind, who falls in love with a working-class prophet. The City where they live is a futuristic city divided between the working class and the city planners which makes things harder. It is a film where we can watch the robot, cityscape and machines   The poster is designed by German graphic artist Heinz Schulz-Neudamm. This work is three-sheet image. In the forground we can see the robot which is starring straight a t the viewer. In the background are high skyscrapers. Everything is keeps in dark black and yellow colours. At the top of the poster we can observe veery interesting typography with title. Background and title are created from ease, sharp shapes. Heinz Schulz-Neudamm was a graphic designer and painter. His real nam...

Otto Dix Research

Image
Background: Born 2 December 1891, Untermhaus He created  surrealistic portrait paintings and he is known for scary vision of war.  He experimented with etching, lithography and woodcut.  New Objectivity movement. The Great War - in August 1914, he volunteered to the army and in 1915 he was a NCO in machine gun unit. (Diary and sketchbook) 1926 - Dix became a professor  "I had the feeling that there was a dimension of reality that had not been dealt with in art: the dimension of ugliness." In this research I want to focus on Otto Dix’s scary vision of war. Dix’s war experiences affected him deeply. He said: “F or years, constantly had these dreams in which I was forced to crawl through destroyed buildings, through corridors through which I couldn’t pass. The rubble was always there in my dreams.” I chose this theme, because in my project I will be create it few works related to a war time. Otto Dix in his paintings, drawing and prints showed corruption and socia...
