Week two: SMART objectives

Image
After today’s lectures we should create smart objective for our projects.  What do you want to do? I want to create 6 illustration inspired by German Expressionism. I want them to be similar to movie posters created that time. I want dedicated one poster to one person. It could be my friend or family member. Every poster will be created in expressionism style. I wanted that every poster tells the story. Like when we see at movie poster we know about what will be movie. I want my posters have characteristic features and story connected with parson about poster will be. For example: my great-grandmother had very hard childhood, she lived in times of war and she was school director. I want that every of this information people could see on illustration.  https://fitsmallbusiness.com/smart-goals-examples/

Class Development Exercise

In this task we were asked for chose one of the methods for ideas development and use it to our own work. I chose first one: the meditative approach.  I had to clear my mind and think about theme that I chosen. Then I had to describe everything I saw in my mind.  My theme is  “Expressionism look deeply into expressionism and incorporate this style into your art and design project”.  For my project I want to create 6 movie posters. My first idea was to recreate the most famous movie posters in expressionism style. But after this exercise and my feedback from my tutor I end up with few different versions of this idea.  I can create my own movie and then create 6 posters for it.  I can ask my friends and family and create advertising posters for theirs movies.  I can create one movie with six main characters and create separate poster for every character.  I can make one advertising poster for movie and 5 different outcomes for this project lik...

Major project: research RE-ASSESMENT

Image
Expressionism   Expressionism is a movement that comes from Germany and Austria. It started in the early twentieth century. It lasted from 1905 to1920 and spread through the Europe. Expressionism was inspired by the Symbolism. Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Munch and James Ensor were very influential to this movement. They encouraged to use different shapes, strong colours and show different emotions. The term expressionism was coined by Antonin Matejcek, Czech art historian. He wanted this term to be in opposition to Impressionism.  Expressionism wasn’t about painting what we see.  It was about feelings and artists. Expressionism artists use different techniques to show emotional state of artist reacting to the anxieties of the world. They tried to express subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse with a person. They used distortion, exaggeration, fantasy and dynamic form of elements.  In Germany, expressionist artists split the movement into...

Week One: Further Ideas Generation

This term we have to create major project related to our continuation route. The project should have six 2D outcomes.  Theme that I chose is: Expressionism. Look deeply into expressionism and incorporate style into your art and design.  My idea for this theme is to recreate movie and theatre posters in this style.  For my research I want to look deeper into expressionism artists, artworks and expressionism itself. What is it? What colour artists used? In which year expressionism started? What was the key ideas and accomplishments? I also want to research how movie posters and theatre posters looked in those days.  In this project I want create my 2d works digitally. To create them I will be using my iPad. All my works will be created in Procreate app. It is a raster graphics editor app for digital painting.  To summarise I’ll be researching: Expressionism  Artists and Art of expressionism  Colours in expressionism  Movie posters and theatre ...

Art Lecture Series One: Odilon Redon

Image
Odilon Redon, Self Portrait, 1880 Odilon Redon was Born in Bordeaux, France on 20th April 1840. His name Odilon came from his mother's name Odile.  Redon started to study drawing at the age of 15. However his father wanted him to be an architect. Odilon changed his path but not for long. He failed his exams at Paris’ Ecole des Beaux-Art. It is a famous place and recognisable to this day. This National School of Fine Art teached artists like: Pierre August Renoir, Eugene Delacroix,Georges Seurat. After failure Redon went back home and started to study sculpture. Although he studied there later under Jean-Leon Gerome - painter and sculptor who used a style known as academicism and orientalism. Odilon Redon described this educational experience as “tortured”, due to Gerome’s overbearing emphasis on mimetic representation.  Gerome was using his artistic skills to present an illusion of reality, real worlds as in the cinema. His paintings look like photography.  However...

Ideas Generation: The Martians Have Landed RE-ASSESMENT

Image
Idea of this post is to draw ideas of my project and explain what I want to do but i can not use any words to explain this.  Here is my explanation: The picture above is explenation of what I wanted to create in this term. It was task that we had to create for class task. Tutor asked as to draw the idea that we have to explain it but we can nit use the words. My first idea at that moment was to recreate famous movie posters in expressionism style. However, the idea developed after all.  to create this poster I was trying to use lot of colours like sky in the painting 'The Scream'. I wanted my painting to be distorted, exaggerated and primitive. Because, Expressionism is mostly about feelings and show the artist's own sensibility to the world's representation, I was trying to shaw what colours I see and recreate the picture in my way of 'seeing' it.  However, looking at that outcome I think that it is not exactly what I wanted to achieve. I do not hate it, howeve...

Week one: First Thoughts... RE-ASSESMENT

Image
In this post I would like to write down my first thoughts about our Set Project. In this project we have to create six 2D pieces using one of the 3 themes we gave. Second thing is that it have to be related with our continuation route.  After reading the themes I decided to go with the third one: Expressionism. Look deeply into expressionism and incorporate this style into your art and design project.  I did a quick research about paintings in expressionism and I found two paintings that I liked the most.  The Scream, 1893 by Edvard Munch https://www.edvardmunch.org/images/paintings/the-scream.jpg This painting is one of the most famous and iconic artwork on the whole world. 'The Scream' is the expressionistic work based on author's experience. What people does not know there are few versions of this painting. There are two versions with oil and tempera and two drawings with pastel and crayon.  The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh https://www.moma.org/learn/mom...

Week one: Ice breaker exercise

Image
In today’s session we were introduced to new module - Art Portfolio. We discussed assessment and course outline. This module is designed to enable us to create a portfolio of work that relates to our progression route.  To start our work we spent time in class writing our welcome post that you can read here.  Second exercise was warm up exercise. We had to create a quick self-portrait. I decided to use my iPad and create digital portrait because it is the fastest way to do it for me. I used app called Procreate.  First I created new document with black background. I decided to use white colour to draw myself. I wanted to create quick sketch but white on black.  Then I uploaded my photo and I started to draw myself on second layer. I used my photo to help myself and create final drawing faster. I used inking brush called “pandani”. Because I worked with one, light colour I decided to mark light on my and don’t work with shadows.  Next step was to remove my ...

Spring Term 2021: Art Portfolio, Week One

Image
Welcome back on my blog! Now I am in spring term 2021 on Art Portfolio 1 module.   This term I would like to improve my blog and website. Last term was very intensive and hard for me because everything was new and a little bit confusing. I didn’t achieve all goals I wanted to. This term it will change.  During the Christmas break I visited my home country and I spent time with my family. I was in my family house so I had time to rest and focus on things I like to do. For example I watched hundreds of stand-ups. I watched new shows but also shows that i watched before. What I can say? I love stand-ups.  One day during when I was visiting one’s of my favourite graphic designers page - Adam Lapko. I saw new post with his nes collection of t-shirts. It was collaborated collection with one of my favourite polish stand-up artist - Mateusz Socha. They made t-shirts with the most famous and recognisable quotes from his show! Look how awesome it is! On photos is Mateusz Soch...
