Art Portfolio 2 Project: 'Ryu Tea' - summary and final conclusion

Art Portfolio 2 Project: 'Ryu Tea' - summary and final conclusion This was last term of the my very first year on DeMontfort University. This blog was created for purpose of  Art Portfolio module. In last term we were asked to create project in which we will include four 2D outcomes and one 3D outcome. We were given three themes and I choose the most interesting for me and ones that I had most ideas - 'Oriental Surprise'.  From my few ideas I choose one to create brand identity for fictional Tea Shop. My inspiration was a article about Japanese Tea Ceremony written by Anna Willmann -  hd_jtea.htm . I thought that is not commonly known topic and it would be interesting to have places in Europe where you can try and taste this tradition.  I started this project with research about tea ceremony. However, I couldn't figure out what I want for a logo and in which direction I would like to go. The final idea came to me when I was making an exercise...

Portfolio: Research

Image
Before Internet it was harder to introduce your work. However it wasn't impossible. Artists on the whole world had to create printed portfolios to could share them with others. Despite the fact that the internet now makes everything easier printed portfolios are still in use.  To create good portfolio it is important to keep everything easy to understand, clean and thoughtful. We add things that introduce our work from the very begging to the final outcome. It makes people help more understand your work and become more familiar. However, we dont have to add everything we have ever created. It is good idea to show your way of thinking and also the most interesting ideas and unique and creative works.  Here are some examples of good portfolios that I liked: - 'Brain' portfolio by TeYosh Studio -  HEART-BRAIN-Portfolio I liked that they included few versions and variations of the work and pieces of work. I think it is good idea and important to show every aspect of you...

Major Project Research: Sewing

Image
For my 3D project I will sew a mascot that will look like my brand character. However, I have never sew anything. That's why I had to look for few tutorials that would help me understand what I am doing. The first thing is to have tools. I won't use a machine, because I don't have it, however I did little research about it. I will use a needle instead.  Tools: scissors - it is important to have a good scissors. As I found out it is hard to cut material clean and easily.  pins - are used to keep material together or pin up in desire position. I used them to pin two pieces together when I wanted to sew edges.  bobbins - it is a cylinder or cone holding thread. For my project I used black thread.  thread  fabric - for my project I used old, cotton shirt needles  They are few types of stitches. I learned few of them. Stitch is a piece of thread sewn in material in a specific way.  I learned stitches such as: back stitch who stitch running stitch Howe...

Major Project: Packaging Research

Image
For my project I wanted design easy and minimalistic packaging. However, it is important to catch people attention. Very good at it is company names 'Burgopak'. They design packaging for big companies such as: Adidas, Barclays, Formula 1, Motorola, Nike, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone.  Burgopak's packagings stand out with a unique design and ingenuity. They create unconventional ways of packing, unpacking, closing and opening. Their important message is that the packaging is all about unboxing experience.  Here are some examples of they work: As you can see they match the style to the brand of the company. Everything is consistent and pleasure to look at. At the same time it is not boring and it is as I said before - unconventional and interesting.  Their one of the most interesting packaging in my opinion was idea for child-resistant packaging for vapes.  To open it, the box had to be press and than push out. It is something that I never saw b...

Brand Character: 3D project

Image
For my 3D project I will create a brand character designed by my in 3D form. I decided that I want create this as a mascot. I will sew it. I will be using for this materials such as:  needles,  threads,  sewing material,  plush. Firs I created a plan for what parts I need to cut out and how I want sew everything together. To understand what kind of separate parts I will have to create I used prototype that we created during classes.  You can read how it helps me to understand the anatomy of my character here:  todays-lecture-we-were-asked-to-do.html First step was to draw the templates end separate parts that I will cut later from material.  Here are my results: Then I cut out shapes from a material and I sew the edges. However I didn't sew all, because I needed space to put cotton in. So I left a little space, I turned over the material end I put cotton inside. Then I sew the left space. I repeated this steps with body and wings, then ...

Costumer Profile

Image
This week during our classes we discuss what are demographics. We talked about what kind of data is collected to describe demographic and what are benefits of knowing it. After this lesson now I can tell that by using this kind of informations and data I am able to target the right market and interest the right costumers.  During our classes we made an exercise in which we interview other person from pair and we had to create a costumer profile of this concrete person. Here are my results:

The Anatomy of..

Image
In this post I want to present the anatomy of typography. On our classes we were asked to draw an image from our area and add labels using a specialist language. I choose to make anatomy of typography. For example I choose to draw name of my tea shop and present labels on it.  In my company name we can find things like: leg - it is portion of a letter that extends downwards, attached at one end free at the other arm - straight or curved portion of letter that extends upwards or outwards x-haight - it is measurement of all lowercase letters serif - short line added at the beginning and the end of strokes  closed and open counter - is the space in  letter However, it is only part of the whole anatomy of typography Recomendation: https://www.graphic-design-institute.com/visual-grammar/anatomy-typography-designers/ https://visme.co/blog/type-anatomy/

Further research & the direction of my project

On today's classes we ere asked to order our thoughts and think of on what  stage we are in our projects.  Introduction: My project is to create a brand (including four 2D outcomes and one 3D outcome) for the imaginary Tea Room/Tea Shop. Theme of my project is: Oriental Surprise. Explore the art of the Orient both traditions and contemporary. That is why I decided my brand to be inspired by Japanese Culture.  For my project I already wrote a few posts with research. You can find on my blog posts about my first thoughts of what I want to create, the overview of my project, research about: tea ceremony, brand character, packaging and artists related to it, Primary and Secondary Research and research about mockups.  How has my research, so far, informed my project? Research that I carried out was generally about Japanese culture. It was important research for me to could understand style that I wanted to design in.  How useful has my research been? It was use...

10 Study Sketches

Image
For my study sketches I choose to create different variations of my logo. I want my brand to looks real so I decided that I will use mockups for my future designs. Here you can watch what I came up with: Because, my brand is related with food industry I tried to consider things that I could really use in real life. I sketch my logo on different types of packaging such us: tea cups, paper cups, bottles or other packaging if I would decide to sell some snacks or sweets. Also I will be creating mockup on building (banner), so I also considered that and brand gadgets like tote bags or face mask.
