Final Outcomes + Reflection

In this post I would like to present all final outcomes for this project. I decided to name it ‘Bajor’. However, every poster here their own subtitle.  The aim of the project was to create six 2D outcomes for chosen theme. I choose ‘Expressionism’ and I decided to create the series of posters for movie that I invented.  The movie is about the life of my great-grandmother. Every poster shows the one of her period of the life. What inspired me to create this project was conversations with my great-grandmother. I thought that every one should hear her story and I used the circumstances to create this project.  The first poster from the series is scene where my great-grandmother has to leave the home, leave the city, leave the father and move to the country side because of the war. I named it ‘Bajor-Train’. On these scene I wanted to present the train and waving kids for goodbye. I kept main colours dark and sad but I did not want them to be black. To contrast I added t...

Poster No. 4: Experimental

Image
For my project I designed 5 posters advertising the movie invented by me. I used same colour palette to every poster, however with one of them I had more trouble.  On this poster you can see my great-grandmother herself. More of creating this process you can read here:  poster-process.html .  I wanted this poster to focus more on the character. That is why I decided to keep background simple. Also I did not want to yellow colour to catch more attention than the character. Yellow is a very bright colour and in my opinion it would be distracting. However, I used this colour in every other poster from series. Here you can watch my struggling with 'how to add the full colour palette to this poster to keep it in same aesthetic'.  At first I wanted to add yellow colour to the title. However it was not consistent with the rest of the posters.  So I started to experiment with background anyway. I wanted to add just some kind of shape so I experimented with ra...

Title: Process

Image
Title for my project is my great-grandmother' surname. In this post I would like to show the process of creating a title design.  When I was doing research for this project I noticed that artists in times of German expressionism used a specific style of fonts to posters. You can observe it here: 'M' by Fritz Lang, 1931 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' by Robert Wiene, 1920 and 'Metropolis' by Fritz Lang, 1927 Every poster (from above) has a font that looks like hand written. What I noticed is that they use sans serif fonts, bold, distorted and with rough edges. What I like in this kind of font that they reminds me of retro/vintage style. Also, I associate it with things like: darkness or horror movies. It also reminds me a little bit the logo of Metalica. So I associate this style also with every things related to metal music.  My biggest inspiration for title design was 'M' and 'Metropolis' by Fritz Lang. I liked posters created for this movie...

Poster: Process

Image
In this poster I want to show the process of creating posters for my project. In every poster I used the same inspirations (you can read about it in my previous post). In every poster I used the same colour palette and the process of creation was similar.  Here I want to show one of the most important poster for me from all the outcomes. It shows my great-grandmother. To create this poster I used one of the photo of my great-grandmother as a reference.  To design it I used ProCrete. First I uploaded the photo, I lower the opacity of the photo and on the new layer I was trying to add the most characteristic parts of her face.  I was trying to add the shape of the profile and than add characteristic wrinkles and shape of eyes. I also added some shadows to create more depth on hair and neck. To draw it I used black colour and the calligraphic, smooth brush. Then I filed the shapes using bucket tool.  However, I had created different different colour palette for th...

Poster Design

Image
For my project I wanted to create 6 movie posters based on movie that I invented. It is story about war time. In my post when I added interview with my great-grandma I write down ideas that I wanted to create. But first I looked for inspirations. I wanted my posters to be simple and created by using simple shapes. The poster that I used as an inspiration is poster creates for German movie 'Der Golem, wie er in die Walt cam' by Paul Wegener.  'Der Golem' is a a movie from 1920. It is silent fantasy-horror about giant creature made of clay. This movie is the prequel to 'The Golem' from 1915.  I couldn't find the reliable informations about author of the poster to this movie, but I did find such name as a Hans Poelzig. He was German architect and set designer. He was appointed Professor of the academy of Arts and Crafts in Breslau (now Wroclaw - the city when I was born). I find his name mentioned in production describe. He created the film's scenery.  ...

Research Post: Font

Image
When I was looking at fonts on old movie posters from German expressionism period I noticed that they use specific kind. It depends from the design but general idea is the same. As most of them looks like hand written (probably are) the font is also at this style. They use mostly bold serif types but in various way.  Here are posters that I looked at: 'Metropolis' by Fritz Lang, 1927 'Die Ratte' by Joe May, 1918 'M' by Fritz Lang, 1931 As you can see all fonts looks like written by hand. They do not use serifs and letters are slightly distrorted. The line is not perfectly straight. Some of the letters are slightly higher or lower. This kind of typeface reminds me of woodcut. The lines are rough and very basic.  For my posters I invent the title 'Bajor'. It is my great-grandma's surname. For type style for my poster I was inspired by 'Metropolis' by Fritz Lang. You can read more about this poster in my previous post.  Here you can watch I cre...

Research: The Anatomy of a Movie Poster

Image
The movie posters and adds are in my opinion the most pleasure to watch way of advertising film. I always admired how designers can express emotions and style and what movie is/will be about.  In this post I would like to discuss the anatomy of movie poster. Graphic design have the rules and so the posters. The most important is layout, that I will discuss below. I won't talk about size here, as I won't print it as a real poster. The size that I choose is a standard A4. However, it is important to think about proper size when you are creating this kind of advertisement.  All posters usually have  title actors/stars director release date slogan (not always) In my opinion the most eye catching and important is typography in posters. Posters helps to present to the mind a cinematic experience in 2d, immovable form. The movie poster is place to be creative but for beginners layouts could be helpful. Here is a layout that I found on Adobe SP: In this example we can see t...

Art Portfolio 2 Project: 'Ryu Tea' - summary and final conclusion

Art Portfolio 2 Project: 'Ryu Tea' - summary and final conclusion This was last term of the my very first year on DeMontfort University. This blog was created for purpose of  Art Portfolio module. In last term we were asked to create project in which we will include four 2D outcomes and one 3D outcome. We were given three themes and I choose the most interesting for me and ones that I had most ideas - 'Oriental Surprise'.  From my few ideas I choose one to create brand identity for fictional Tea Shop. My inspiration was a article about Japanese Tea Ceremony written by Anna Willmann -  hd_jtea.htm . I thought that is not commonly known topic and it would be interesting to have places in Europe where you can try and taste this tradition.  I started this project with research about tea ceremony. However, I couldn't figure out what I want for a logo and in which direction I would like to go. The final idea came to me when I was making an exercise...

Portfolio: Research

Image
Before Internet it was harder to introduce your work. However it wasn't impossible. Artists on the whole world had to create printed portfolios to could share them with others. Despite the fact that the internet now makes everything easier printed portfolios are still in use.  To create good portfolio it is important to keep everything easy to understand, clean and thoughtful. We add things that introduce our work from the very begging to the final outcome. It makes people help more understand your work and become more familiar. However, we dont have to add everything we have ever created. It is good idea to show your way of thinking and also the most interesting ideas and unique and creative works.  Here are some examples of good portfolios that I liked: - 'Brain' portfolio by TeYosh Studio -  HEART-BRAIN-Portfolio I liked that they included few versions and variations of the work and pieces of work. I think it is good idea and important to show every aspect of you...
